    Astrocytes play a key role in the survival of neurons

    Researchers from IDIBAPS have participated in a study led by the Institute of Neurosciences of the University of Barcelona (UBNeuro) in which a potential therapeutic strategy to treat Alzheimer’s has been identified. The study, published in Journal of Neuroscience, shows in a model of the illness in mice, that astrocytes –a type of cells in the brain- are able to release proteins that favour survival of neurons. According to the researchers, these results are a step forward in the understanding of the physiology of astrocytes, and they bring the chance to use this type of cells in therapeutic ways to treat Alzheimer’s disease.

    Graphene-based implant overcomes technical limitation to record brain activity at extremely low frequencies

    The body of knowledge about the human brain is growing exponentially, but questions big and small remain unanswered. Researchers have been using electrode arrays to record the brain’s electrical activity for decades, mapping activity in different brain regions to understand what it looks like when everything is working, and what is happening when it is not.

    Researchers from IDIBAPS and CRG, awarded with an ERC Synergy grant to unravel chronic lymphocytic leukemia

    The European Research Council (ERC) today announced the results of the 2018 Synergy Grants call for proposals. The aim of Synergy Grants is to address ambitious research questions that can only be answered by the coordinated work of a small group of two to four principal investigators and their teams, bringing together their complementary skills, knowledge and resources. The ultimate goal of the scheme is to give support to a close collaborative interaction that will enable transformative research at the forefront of science, capable of yielding groundbreaking or even unpredictable scientific results and/or cross-fertilizing disciplines.

    Sleep apnea could favour tumor growth at young ages

    A scientific study led by researchers at Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS, the University of Barcelona and the CIBERES, conducted with animal models, states that sleep apnea can favour lung cancer growth in young individuals. Aging would be a protecting factor against the fast tumor development, induced by this sleep alteration.

    Statins efficacy confirmed in advanced phases of cirrhosis in an animal model

    Researchers from IDIBAPS publish a translational paper in Gastroenterology demonstrating that statins improve survival and main clinical symptoms in advanced cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). The paper also describes and validates the first animal model of ACLF, which has allowed studying the beneficial effects of statins. The work has been coordinated by Jordi Gracia-Sancho, leader of the Liver Vascular Biology Research Group from IDIBAPS and CIBEREHD, and Jaume Bosch, emeritus investigator from the same group, and first authors are Dinesh Tripathi and Marina Vilaseca.
