Area 1
Biological aggression and response mechanisms
Area 1 is formed by 8 teams that conduct research into the response mechanisms to biological aggressions from different standpoints. This area carries out a wide range of activities, which are divided up into two parts. Firstly, the study of infectious and toxic agents, and secondly, immunological and inflammatory reactions of the body. Read more

Area 2
Respiratory, cardiovascular and renal pathobiology and bioengineering
The area has 8 teams, and is focused on the study of three vital parts of the body: the respiratory, cardiovascular and renal systems. It deals with the various pathologies and risks affecting these systems, from different standpoints. Read more

Area 4
Clinical and experimental neuroscience
This area of IDIBAPS specialises in the study of neurological and psychiatric diseases. Based on the excellent cooperation between the experimental and clinical units, its 11 teams conduct research into topics ranging from the study of the structure/function relationship in the nervous system and its basic molecular mechanisms for neurotransmission and cell death to the development and evaluation of new experimental therapies. It also includes innovative trends such as systems neuroscience. Read more

Area 6
International health
This area was set up in 2007 to provide a response to the growing importance of tropical diseases and those of developing countries. Its basic missions are research related to public health, epidemiology and the prevention and control of transmissible diseases. Other key fields of research conducted by the two teams in this area are health emergencies and hospital infections. Read more

Groups Affiliated with the Hospital Clínic Health Research Institute-IDIBAPS
This new IDIBAPS research area was set up to reflect the growing importance of research into Primary Care. Primary Care Centres (PCCs) are the gateway for citizens to access the public health system and therefore, all prevention and research carried out there are extremely valuable for improving the orientation of health systems. Because this is a group of multidisciplinary, transversal professionals, it is able to take a broad-based approach to patients and their illnesses. Read more
