Background information about Barcelona and Idibaps
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and the second largest city in Spain, with a population above 1.5 million. It is the sixth-most populous urban area in the European Union after Paris, London, Ruhr area, Madrid and Milan. About 5 million people live in the Barcelona metropolitan area. It is also Europe's largest metropolis on the Mediterranean coast. It enjoys a Mediterranean climate, without extreme temperaturas, nice the most part of the year.
Barcelona is recognised as a Global City due to its importance in finance, commerce, media, entertainment, arts, international trade, education and tourism. Indeed, it is one of Europe's principal Mediterranean ports.
IDIBAPS is a public consortium that was formed in 1996 by the Catalan Government, a University Hospital (Hospital Clinic de Barcelona, HCB) listed as the best hospital in Spain with national and international recognition, the University of Barcelona (only Spanish University included in the ranking of the best 200 worldwide) and the Biomedical Research Institute from the Spanish Research Council (CSIC). IDIBAPS is a highly active Research Organization, recognized both nationally and internationally, that combines Health Care with the Research. We are located in the heart of Barcelona, one of the most dynamic cities in the Mediterranean.
IDIBAPS is a consortium that encourages translational research, innovation and technological progress in the field of biomedicine through different programmes addressing diseases with a high prevalence, morbidity and mortality. It is structured into 5 different research areas that aims making people’s health better.
