Strategic objectives
The general research objectives of the microbiology department of Hospital Clínic include the following 3 areas of microbiology:
1. New diagnostic techniques
2. Microbial pathogenesis
3. Antimicrobial resistance
The principal objective is to translate the results obtained in research to the daily clinical practice of the microbiology department. However, the development of basic research to explain problems or situation that regularly occur in clinical practice is also very common.
Main lines of research
The lines of research aimed at achieving the above objectives are:
1. Mechanisms of resistance of Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
2. New microbiology techniques in etiologic diagnosis of pneumonia.
3. Research on the relationship between antibiotic resistance and virulence.
4. Molecular bases of antibiotic resistance in multiresistant bacteria.
5. Design of new antibacterial agents.
