Ministry of Economía y Competitividad

IDIBAPS is fully involved in the new Spanish cooperative research structure: CIBERs, RETICs and CAIBER

The Ministry of Economía y Competitividad and the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII) promote health research. Its actions are focused on developing its own research programmes and organisational aspects of the research structure in Spain. IDIBAPS obtains a considerable level of financial resources through its competitive tenders.

In addition to traditional initiatives such as projects financed through the ISCIII's Strategic action in health, the Ministry focuses much of its effort on strengthening National Research Networks. The CIBERs, RETICs and CAIBER are a new way of understanding cooperative biomedical research that has given excellent results during recent years. IDIBAPS participates in most of these virtual research structures and leads some of them that are listed below.

ERDF for the consolidation of the scientific infrastructure and research projects

IDIBAPS receives funding from the European Regional Development Fund. The ERDF granted to IDIBAPS have made possible the acquisition of new scientific equipment for IDIBAPS' laboratories in the CEK building, and have co-funded specific research projects.Below is a list of the research projects financed by the European Commission in which we participate:

Networked Biomedical Research Centres (CIBERs )

  • CIBERdem (IP: Dr. Ramon Gomis)

CIBER in Diabetes and Associated Metabolic Disorders. Scientific director: Dr. Ramon Gomis

  • CIBERehd (IP: Dr. Jordi Bruix)

CIBER for Liver and Digestive Diseases. Scientific director: Dr. Jordi Bruix

  • CIBERes (IP: Dr. Àlvar Agustí)

CIBER for Respiratory Diseases. Scientific director: Dr. Àlvar Agustí

Cooperative Health Research Thematic Networks (RETICs)

  • RIS (IP: Dr. Josep Maria Gatell)

Red Española de Investigación en SIDA (RIS) (Spanish AIDS Research Network)

  • REEM (IP: Dr. Pablo Villoslada)

Spanish Network on Multiple Sclerosis (REEM)

  • Red PREDIMED (IP: Dr. Ramon Estruch)

Alimentación saludable en la prevención primaria de enfermedades crónicas

Consortium to Support Network Biomedical Research - Spanish Clinical Trials Platform (CAIBER)

Referring to CAIBER, it aims to empower the development of clinical research programs and clinical trials, both internal and in a network. It focuses especially on those who have no commercial interest or oriented to prevention, diagnose, treatment and services, in the thematic areas reflected in the Strategic Action in Health as relevant social and public health interest groups. The objective is to facilitate and promote multi-center clinical trials which are safe, rigorous, controlled and guaranteed to preserve the quality of the study, patient safety and reliability of the data.

IDIBAPS is a node in the CAIBER consortium:

  • Trilla A, Carné X. Consorcio de Apoyo a la Investigación Biomédica en Red – Plataforma Española de Ensayos Clínicos (CAIBER). Sponsor: Ministerio de Ciencia e innovación. Instituto de Salud Carlos III, CAI08/01/0013. Duration: 01/01/2009 to 12/31/2012.
